Chiness New Year

Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is the time that signifies celebration and merriment for all the Chinese people. The Chinese calendar has a cycle of twelve year and each year is named after an animal. The Chinese New Year 2009 is the year of the Ox.

Tradition says that before Lord Buddha departed from the earth, he had called for all the animals to come to him. When the cat got to know about the news, he informed the rat about it and the two animals decided to go together the next day. However, the next morning the rat did not wake up the cat and thus...

the cat could not make it to the gathering on time and did not get a year.

The rat made it first to the assembly and became the first Chinese New Year animals. This is the reason why the first of the twelve years is the Year of the Rat followed by the year of Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

As a token of appreciation, Lord Buddha named a year after each of the twelve animals in the order of their arrival. According to Chinese myth, it is believed that people born in that year share different traits.
