Christmas is a festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Jesus, a big occasion in the Christian calendar. The festival is also referred by other names such as Christ’s Mass, Yule Tide, Nativity, and Winter Pascha. At present, many refer to this auspicious day in its abbreviated form, ‘X-Mas’. 

It is celebrated each year on the 25th December, which aptly marks the end of year. However, this date is considered as Christmas in accordance to Western Christianity and some Eastern Orthodox Churches. In some countries, this festive day is celebrated on 24th December. Armenian Apostolic Churches and the Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Christmas on 6th and 7th January respectively. The festival of Christmas is a day when family and friends gather to enjoy the festive spirits, as educational institutions and offices usually remain closed for the day. Christmas spirit is celebrated all across the world in a harmonious way. Varieties of Christmas Eve gifts, Christmas greetings are made accessible in the market to choose from.

The legend of Santa Claus or Father Christmas closely associated with Christmas, who is said to travel from North Pole to give gifts to children in compliance to their wishes. This holiday is awaited by many children with the hope that Santa Claus is going to grant their wishes, while they are asleep. Children make a list of wishes and hang them in their rooms so that Father Christmas can read them. In fact, some of the parents buy Christmas gifts that their children desire for, and place them in their rooms.

Gifts and decoration form an integral part of the Christmas celebrations. Christmas gifts such as candles, bells, soft toys, lights and many more used to make this occasion memorable. It is an occasion when family and friends exchange gifts. These presents are given not only to children but even to grandparents, parents and other relatives. Christmas carol also comprises a significant part when groups of individuals go from door to door singing on the Christmas Eve.
