Eid Ul-Fitr is one out of the two Eids celebrated by the Muslims of all over the world. It is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of the month Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. The word ‘Eid’ refers to ‘festivity’, while the word ‘Fitr’ means ‘to break the fast’. Thus, this Eid symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period.

According to the Holy Quran, the religious book of the Muslims, they are commanded to complete their fast on the last day of Ramadan and then recite the Takbir all throughout the period of Eid. Common Arabic greeting used during Eid are Eid Mubarak.

In addition to this, different countries have their own greetings based on local language and traditions.

During the Eid Ul-Fitr fast, the Muslims typically wake up early in the morning and have a small breakfast before attending a special Eid prayer performed in congregation at mosques.

Muslims are encouraged to dress in their best clothes to attend the Eid prayer. The Eid prayer is followed by the sermon and then a supplication asking for forgiveness, mercy and help for all living beings across the world. After the prayers, people visit their relatives, friends and acquaintances and some people also pay visits to the graveyards.

The celebration of Eid Ul-Fitr starts on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal and lasts for three days. This Eid is sometimes also known as ‘small Eid’.
