Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a festival celebrated by the African American people. It is a 7 day long celebration about their culture and their history. The celebration of Kwanzaa begins on December 26th and continues until New Years Day, January 1st.

Various activities such as such as candle-lighting and pouring of libations and culminating in a feast and gift giving are observed during the celebration of Kwanzaa. It was first celebrated from December 26, 1966 to January 1, 1967 and was first created by Maulana Karenga. The main reason behind creating this holiday was to give Blacks an opportunity to celebrate themselves and history.

Families celebrate Kwanzaa by decorating their households with objects of art, colorful African cloth and fresh fruits that represent African idealism. During the ceremonies of Kwanzaa, it is customary to include children and to give respect and gratitude to ancestors.

Generally, a Kwanzaa ceremony includes drumming and musical selections, reading of the "African Pledge" and the Principles of Blackness, a discussion of the African principle, artistic performance and a feast.

Today, most of the African-American families celebrate Kwanzaa along with Christmas and New Year's. Cultural exhibitions are held as an annual celebration at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts featuring interpretive dance, African dance, song and poetry.
