Kwanza is an African American festival that is celebrated by culture, community and family. American people celebrate this festival till 7 days and discuss about their culture and their history. Kwanza begins from Christmas day that is on 26th December and continues till New Year’s, 1st January. Although it is somewhat a new holiday, Kwanza’s heredity can be traced to African harvest celebrations.
Kwanza was started by Dr. Malulana Karenga in 1966. He was the professor and chairman of Black Studies at California. He introduced this festival to bring the African American community people back together which was cut off due to Watts’ riots in Los Angeles. Basically, the word Kwanza comes from the Swahili phrase “Matunda Ya Kwanza” meaning “First Fruit”. African American people are highly encouraged to celebrate this festival and to truly value its cultural meaning.
