During the fasting, Muslims are not allowed to eat or drink anything during the daylight hours. Also, there are other limitations of refraining too which include prohibition on smoking and having sexual intercourse during the time. Since the time is of grievance, people remove all their adornments and jewellery. Also, extra nutrition like oiling hair and beautification of the skin etc are not indulged into.

The fasting which is done by all Muslims is taken up for around 40 days from the first day of the New Year. The tenth day of Muharram which is the Ashura is a very important day. Fasting on this day is optional. However, there is a meal that is prepared commonly for a number of people. Everyone is supposed to have their share of the meal from the same utensils since this signifies a unification of ideas and faith between people of this faith.
