The Islamic calendar or also the Muslim or Hijri calendar which is based on the moon and its cycles holds a major importance in the Muslim countries and all over the world to decide the dates of Islamic festivals. The calendar has 12 months in a year but the lunar year itself is 11 days shorter than the solar year.

In each successive solar year therefore, all Islamic holidays keep shifting from the previous dates to 11 days earlier.
