Of the month of the Muharram, the first day is considered to be the Islamic New Year. The month is that of grievance and prayers and not celebrations in any way. People have to live under limitations and be attached to Allah Ta’lah from their soul. Prayers for the year ahead and repentance for the year gone past are done in the first month of the New Year.

Even though this is not common, some people have started to exchange gifts and cards on the occasion of New Year.

Sweetest Day Gifts

The first day of Muharram is the beginning of the month of fasting ahead. This time is no celebration and people are supposed to have a very simple lifestyle in this month. Fasting begins on the Islamic New Year day which requires the people not to eat, drink, smoke or have sex during the daylight. Only after the sun has set completely are they are allowed to consume anything. Since the Islamic calendar is based on the moon, it is shorter than the solar Gregorian calendar. Therefore the date of Muharram keeps shifting every year in the Gregorian calendar. The tentative dates for a few years to come are:

  • 1431 AH: 18 December 2009
  • 1432 AH: 7 December 2010
  • 1433 AH: 26 November 2011
  • 1434 AH: 15 November 2012
