It is only after sunset that people can eat or drink anything. Also, since the month is of grieving, Muharram food is very simple and sober and there are no lavish meals spread out to consume like it is done in the month of Ramadan. Also, no kind of celebrations are to be made in the month of Muharram.
On the tenth day of Muharram which is the feast of Ashura, people gather together and cook a hotch-potch or Ashura of dishes. This is done in remembrance of martyrs of the Battle of Kerbala. Anyone and everyone is supposed to have the meal from this common pot. Whosoever has enjoyed the fragrance of the food is free to come and have it too. Eating from the same pot is symbolic of unification of the people.
