Fasting is done during the daytime which involves no eating and drinking. It is only after sunset that they can consume anything. Also, the food consumed is simple since it is a grieving month. On the tenth day which is Ashura, a common hotch potch dish which anyone can come and consume.
During the time of Muharram, no celebrations are to be made. People remove all their adornments and no extra nourishment like even oiling of hair is done. Processions which have people in black ensembles are arranged. People walk barefoot and inflict other pains on themselves like striking their body with chains is also done by the people.
