Literally meaning the night of Ascent, Shab-i-Miraj is the blessed night when Holy Prophet Muhammad was transported to transcendental spiritual levels. He was spiritually transported to heaven and a stage of nearness to god was obtained which was unmatched then and also now when no other human can reach those levels. Human comprehension is way below those levels making that Ascent simply heavenly.

journey was physical. Shab-i-Miraj is more appropriately in relation with the spiritual uplift of Prophet to the nearness of the Throne of God which is unattainable by another human form. Even the angel, Gabriel could no further than a limit whereas the Holy Prophet continued the Ascent. Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and other prophets are said to have met him on the way but he rose to higher levels.

The celebration of Shab-i-Miraj is done in a very special manner. Mosques and houses in the Muslim countries are beautifully decorated and illuminated with lights, candles and oil lamps. Hymns and prayers are sung in the mosques in the evening time. There are many speeches too after the prayers which discuss the history and the story of the glorious ascent of the Holy Prophet. Charity and food distribution is also done by some.
