Valentine's Day Gifts

The Chinese people follow the lunar calendar. On the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, it is considered to be the Chinese Valentine’s Day. There is a common belief and a story that is said to be behind the celebration of this day. It is the story of a poor boy who gets married to a fairy princess.

The poor boy had nothing but an ox as inheritance after the death of his father from his brother and sister-in-law. The ox, who was someone immortal from heaven sent to earth for penance, suggested to the poor boy to go and bath in the brook if he wishes to get married.

It was here that the two met and he fell in love with the 7th princess of the emperor. He took a promise that she would get married to him only and they did, to have 2 children later on.

When the fairy’s grandmother tried to bring her back to her father, the man along with his children hid in the hide of the ox and followed them. the grandmother then, to separate them, used her hairpin and made a milky way between them. The man was left on the star Altair and the fairy on Vega. It is said that on the 7th day of  the 7th month, the two stars meet and so do the lovers and the day is thus celebrated as Chinese Valentine’s Day.
