However, it was Saint Valentine who still continued to get the couples married secretly so as an opposition to this. This infuriated the emperor and he got Saint Valentine beheaded so as set an example. It was on the death of Saint Valentine on February 14th, 207 AD that this tradition of this day of love was started. Sainthood was awarded to this priest after his death for the sacrifice that he had made.
However, there are other myths and versions of this history. Some believe he was killed because he helped Christians in escaping from the prisons. Another one says that he fell in love with the daughter of the jailor and was therefore killed. Any of these may be believed but what remains is the celebration of love on the Valentine’s Day.
